Excerpt from The Methodist Episcopal Church and the Civil War This study of the Methodist Episcopal Church in its relation to the Civil War was begun several years ago, and was continued and is brought to its present form as a Doctor's Thesis at the University of Pennsylvania. And I wish in the very beginning to acknowledge the advice and assistance I have received, particularly from Professor H. V. Ames, of the University of Pennsylvania, and also from Professor R. T. Stevenson, of the Ohio Wesleyan University, who has written the Introduction. The study deals with facts alone, and I have tried to be absolutely fair to all parties. Most of the material which I have had to use is of controversial character, and it was not always easy to come to a conclusion as to the exact facts, and it is not at all to be wondered at if I have made mistakes in some of my conclusions; but while I admit possible mistakes, I can still lay claim to a clear conscience, as far as fairness is concerned. In many places the account is not as readable as I should have liked to have made it, and where such is the case I have no excuse to offer except that in my desire to be fair I have crowded down all feeling and any attempt at a glorification of the Church, the absence of which has perhaps made the narrative seem more prosaic.
